Sustainability is the key to all facets of life...whether it be farming and gardening, camping and kayaking, or simply living on this planet from day to day.

Campers, hikers, and lovers of the outdoors have been doing it for years. We call it 'leave no trace' ~ leaving things nicer than we found them ~ in essence, the very same philosophy that we learned as little children but, which sadly, for many has fallen by the wayside as life just keeps getting busier and busier and as the world keeps moving faster and faster.

Slow down for a moment and sit a spell in the rocker on the front porch as I do my best to return my own life to those simpler times.

Enjoy your visit, come back as often as you like, and feel free to bring a friend every now and again~

Yeah. Right. Sure.

I have come to the realization that, as much as I have tried to fight it over the past year, Facebook is a necessary evil in my life. I have actually canceled my Facebook account on more than one occasion within the past six months. Each time, with the good intention of leaving Facebook behind once and for all.
Ahhh...but if only it were that simple!
Time and time again, I have been sucked back into the abyss that is the time that one can waste on Facebook. It all starts out very innocently. I start to wonder about the summer photos that my cousin who lives on the other side of the country might be posting of her kids. Facebook has made it far more simple and far less intrusive for folks to just post them on Facebook, instead of emailing them.

Or...I learn that my high school class reunion is being organized and discussed on Facebook. I send an email to a friend asking about it and the response is..."I've set it up as an event with its own Facebook page."

Or...I am dying to see the latest photos and marketing that my daughter is doing with her farm. "Mom...just look on facebook. It's a lot easier for me than mailing it to you."

Or...the latest little trick...some of my friends are now using their Facebook email as their main email and send me notes via Facebook.
It's a losing battle, I swear!

"Just one little peek..."
One little peek won't hurt anything and won't waste a whole lot of time. I won't comment on anything. I will go straight to the photos I need to see and without looking to the left or the right, will return to my normal life...quickly. No time wasting for this lady. "Nope...not this time," I say with wholehearted determination. I am a woman on a mission and I mean business.

Well...one little peek leads to reading a few comments posted by family and friends. Then...a few more...and a few more. The next thing I know, I have wasted far too much time reading posts about a childhood friend's kid's orthodontist appointment or clicking on a cute, but time-wasting link posted there by a friend, family member, or former co-worker whose emails I used to avoid if they had the letters FW: in front of them. Yet, somehow I get sucked in every time on Facebook.

So...it is with a renewed sense of strength that I avow to avoid Facebook as much as possible in 2012. We shall see how this goes. As I try to convince myself that I will be able to get away from Facebook scot-free in 2012, I think that in my heart, I really know better.
As I type this...the Muppets video from my children's youth keeps running through my mind.

Who do you think you're foolin'? Yeah. Right. Sure..

Wish me luck...even if I can avoid it as much as possible, it will be a good start!

I'm back...well, almost!

I have been spending far too much time off the porch in the past month. I've not been doing awful things, mind you. I have been camping and kayaking and doing all sorts of fun things, actually. I guess that I have just been having a wee bit too much fun to sit down and blog about things. For that, my dear readers, I do apologize.

Some of you know that I am a middle school teacher and that, of course, has taken up much of my time, too...as it should.

Well...I'll be back very, very soon...I promise. I'm promising not only you...but I'm promising myself, as well. One week from today we begin our winter break. I am confident that when I'm home on my break I will not only have lots more time to blog...but much more fun and interesting things to blog about.

See you next week!
